In order to encourage literacy skills in young children, our library will be partnering with the Canon-McMillan School District to implement the “iLearn to Read Initiative” for all kindergarten students.  Our goals with this initiative are to instill the habit of lifelong learning and to deliver a library card into every kindergartner’s hand.  In September, our Children’s Department staff will be present at the Open Houses of all Canon-McMillan elementary schools to meet and greet parents/guardians.  At Open House, you will learn more about our “iLearn to Read Initiative” and will also be able to apply for and receive, with proper documentation, a library card for your kindergarten child.  In addition, Ms. Barb and Ms. Amy, our beloved children’s librarians, will be making visits to all the kindergarten classrooms this fall to present stories and get to know the next generation of readers.  Starting Monday, September 25, every kindergartner that comes to the children’s circulation desk at the library with a parent or guardian to get a library card or to use their new library card for the first time will receive a library welcome packet.  The Frank Sarris Public Library and its staff are excited to launch this program to jump-start literacy in our community.
